Summary

The Ibermuseums Program has some important partnerships in the field of museums that aim to strengthen public policies for preserving the museum heritage of Ibero-American cultures.

Recent examples of tragic natural disasters, such as those in Chile (2010), Brazil (2010), Haiti (2011), Spain (2011) and El Salvador (2011), show the need for activities to address the risk of museum heritage. Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters have harmful effects and cause irreparable losses to the populations and their cultural legacies. By training museum professionals, we can mitigate not only these natural challenges but also human ones, such as fire, theft and neglect in maintaining spaces and artefacts.

In partnership with the Getty Foundation, the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture and the Ibermuseums Program have made progress in promoting among the state bodies responsible for museums a series of methodologies to prevent or undertake pro-active action to implement emergency plans in case of natural disasters and security plans to protect the museum heritage of our region.
