About the Ibermuseos Programme

Ibermuseos is the leading intergovernmental cooperation programme for museums in Ibero-America. Since 2007 we have worked collaboratively to strengthen the more than 10,000 museums across the region, currently connecting 22 countries with the aim of contributing to the coordination of public museums policies in Ibero-America, while promoting sustainable development and regional integration of museums.

Our work is structured around six strategic areas that promote the development of the museum sector and the protection of museums in all their diversity:

• Strengthening Public Policies for Museums in Ibero-America

We promote the strengthening of public policies for museums through coordination among Ibero-American countries, technical cooperation, and the development of shared agendas for the sector. Through the Encuentros Iberoamericanos de Museos, Diálogos Ibermuseos, technical assistance, and other advocacy initiatives we foster the exchange of experiences, the development of recommendations, and the institutional capacity building, contributing to helping to consolidate governance frameworks, cooperation mechanisms, and public policy that respond to the challenges facing Ibero-American museums.

• Ibero-American Museum Observatory (OIM)

We promote the production, coordination, and circulation of knowledge about Ibero-American museums to strengthen public policies and contribute to evidence-based decision-making. Through the OIM, we develop research, information systems, indicators, and publications that expand knowledge of the sector, foster cooperation among countries, and contribute to the design, monitoring, and evaluation of museum policies in Ibero-America.

• Museums Social Role

We promote the strengthening of the social role of museums through initiatives focused on education, accessibility, public participation, and inclusion, adopting a rights-based, gender, and intersectional approach. We promote incentive mechanisms, such as the Premio Ibermuseos de Educación, develop support tools, such as the Autodiagnóstico de Acessibilidade, and foster initiatives that contribute to more inclusive, participatory, diverse museums that are deeply engaged with their communities.

• Protection of Museum Heritage

We contribute to the protection, preservation, and social appropriation of Ibero-American museum heritage through technical cooperation, training, the development of tools, and support mechanisms such as the Fondo Ibermuseos para el Patrimonio Museológico. We strengthen the capacities of institutions and their teams in risk management, preventive conservation, collections management, and the safeguarding of heritage in emergency situations, contributing to more sustainable, participatory, and resilient management.

• Training and capacity building

We strengthen the capacities of museum professionals through training initiatives, the production and circulation of knowledge, and the exchange of experiences and best practices among institutions across Ibero-America. Convinced that museums teams are fundamental to the effective functioning of museums, we promote opportunities for learning, cooperation, and innovation that help strengthen their knowledge and skills to respond to contemporary challenges.

• Sustainability of Museum Institutions

We promote the adoption of sustainable management models in the day-to-day work of museums, focusing on four dimensions: social, cultural, economic, and environmental. We provide a Common Conceptual Framework on the Sustainability, organize encounters, training activities, and spaces for reflection on sustainable practices in museums, and offer self-assessment  tools that help institutions plan their future in a resilient manner, in alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda.
